Mexican journalist shot dead in northern state of Sonora
Authorities say a Mexican radio journalist has been shot and killed in the northern state of Sonora.
The state attorney’s office says Santiago Barroso, 47, was sprayed with bullets upon answering a knock at the door of his home Friday evening. Barroso retreated inside and called for an ambulance. He died less than two hours later at a hospital from two bullet wounds to his stomach and one to his left clavicle.
Barroso is at least the third journalist in Mexico to be murdered this year.
The state attorney’s office has opened an investigation.
Mexico currently ranks seventh in the Committee to Protect Journalists’ impunity index, which tallies the number of unsolved journalist murders as a percentage of a country’s population in places where it’s dangerous to work.
