Yuma Road Report, Week of Feb. 28
The following list features the expected city projects that will be affecting the busy streets of Yuma.
City Projects
24th Street and Pacific Avenue
The City’s pavement marking crew will be conducting operations on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Friday, March 1 at the intersection of 24th Street and Pacific Avenue. During this time crews will be painting the pavement markings at the intersection of 24th Street and Pacific Avenue which will result in some lane restrictions in all directions. Traffic traveling south on Pacific Avenue will be affected the most during this time.
4th Avenue, 32nd Street to 40th Street
Crews are reconstructing 4th Avenue from 32nd Street to 40th Street. Local traffic will be one-way at all times (southbound only) until the new pavement section is completed. Northbound traffic is detoured along 40th Street to Avenue A. Southbound through traffic is encouraged to use Arizona Avenue and Avenue A as alternate routes. Pedestrians are urged to use caution while walking near the work zone. The project will be completed near the end of Feb. or early Mar.
32nd Street at Big Curve area
The City’s Public Works crews will be working on the signal on 32nd Street at the Big Curve, leading to the traffic signal being shut off for four days. The project is tentatively scheduled for March 18. Traffic will be allowed to continue through the Big Curve, with two lanes open in each direction except for at the mall driveway (one lane in each direction).
City Street Maintenance
Asphalt maintenance operations for the week of March 4-8 are as follows:
Crack Seal Operations:
Arizona Avenue from 16th St to 24th Street.
Ocotillo 5 and 4B subdivisions.
Rancho Sereno.
Grinding Operations:
Sunset Mesa subdivision.
Roxaboxen Park subdivision (2nd Ave from 8th Street to 13th street)
Rancho Sereno subdivision.
Other utility projects and encroachment permits
16th Street at Yuma Palms (Century Link)
Century Link crews will be working on Castle Dome Road and 16th Street near the entrance of the Yuma Palms Regional Center beginning the first week of March. During part of the 60-day project to place a new conduit, the center lane of traffic will close at the mall entrance off 16th Street. Drivers should use caution.
12th Street Between 1st and 2nd Avenue (TrueNet)
A portion of 12th Street between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue will be closed for fiber installation work. Drivers will need to detour through 13th Street to get around. The seven-day project is expected to be completed by the second week in March.
Madison Avenue, north end
Century Link crews will make repairs to buried telephone cable along Madison Avenue in the north end. This monthlong project will cause lane closures, parking will be restricted along Madison Avenue and sidewalk closures will occur in places.
3rd Street, between 4th Avenue and Avenue A (Century Link)
Century Link crews are starting a 5-month project to repair telephone cable along 3rd Street, between 4th Avenue and Avenue A. The project which will involve accessing manholes will cause lane closures and in some areas sidewalk closures.
Avenue 5 -1/2E near 40th Street
NEI will perform repairs on the culvert that crosses Avenue 5 ½ E near 40th Street (County 12th Street). The repairs will trigger a full closure of Avenue 5 ½ E from March 4-18.
Avenue 3E, 36th Street to 40th Street
Crews will be doing overhead work along Avenue 3E from 36th Street to 40th Street from Feb. 15 to Mar. 8 for a Telecommunications Fiber Install. The project will require shoulder work along this portion of Avenue 3E and will slow traffic due to its reduced speed limit.
Avenue 3E near 32nd Street
Northbound traffic along Avenue 3E near 32nd street will have a right lane closure and reduced speed limit through March 4.
32nd Street near S. Barkley Ranch Avenue (extended)
A project near Crane Middle School (4450 W. 32nd Street) is being extended through March and will impact traffic on 32nd Street (Co. 11st Street) from S. Barkley Ranch Avenue to S. 45th Avenue. The traffic control in place will be extended to March 4.
Avenue C and 28th Street
Avenue C is closed near its intersection with 28th Street as crews install a new sewer and water line, requiring road closures in the area. Traffic control devices will be in place, including signs for alternate routes and detours. The project is anticipated to be complete by mid-March.
Avenue B, 8th Street
Century Link is starting a 60-day project this week on Avenue B at 8th Street. A short section of the right southbound lane will be closed during the project. The work is expected to finish in early April.
2nd Street, near Yuma County Superior Courthouse
Century Link will be installing fiber in front of the Superior Courthouse downtown. The 60-day project should be complete around early April and will require the sidewalk to be closed along 2nd Street. During the timeframe in which the project is underway, parking spaces along 2nd Street in that area may not be available.
24th Street at Mary Avenue
Century Link is working on a project at the northeast corner of Mary Avenue and east 24th Street, requiring lane closures. Drivers will be directed to keep left when traveling south of Mary Avenue. The project is slated to finish in April.
16th Street, near Avenue C
Crews will be working on 16th Street near Avenue C, which is in close proximity to a local elementary school (HL Suverkrup). The 60-day project will begin Feb. 1 and will include lane closures and other possible traffic restrictions.
Arizona Avenue, near Crossroads Mission
A permit has been extended to a contractor working on Arizona Avenue’s roadway near the Crossroads Mission, requiring a full closure. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the closures. Please use an alternate route. The road will close Jan. 22 and is slated to reopen in April.
24th Street, Ridgeview Drive to Avenue A
Century Link has begun nighttime work along 24th Street, requiring lane closures between Ridgeview Drive and Avenue A. The speed limit is reduced to 25 mph in the area and the eastbound right lane will be closed. The total duration for the project is 60 days and should be complete by March 9. The bus stop located between Elks Lane and Avenue A is also temporarily closed.
24th Street, between 1st Avenue and Virginia Drive
Century Link will be repairing a telephone cable on 24th Street between 1st Avenue and Virginia Drive, leading to a lane closure on 24th Street beginning Dec. 17 through Mar. 15. The speed limit will be reduced along 24th Street in that area.
Pacific Avenue, 12th-15th streets (Southwest Gas)
Pacific Avenue has lane closures and limited access to the Yuma Palms Mall as part of a Southwest Gas project to install a new main line at Pacific Avenue and 12th Street. While work is underway, barricades will be utilized on Pacific Avenue and turns may be restricted onto Pacific Avenue from adjacent streets, as needed for the project and crew safety. The contractor will notify residents in the area of roadwork and is to accommodate access to businesses and homes throughout the project’s timeline if it is safe to do so. The entirety is to be completed by Mar. 13.
Coming soon:
24th Street and Avenue B
A private contractor is performing shoulder work on the northeast corner of the 24th Street and Avenue B intersection. The 30-day project will cause lane closures. It is scheduled to begin on March 11.
Avenue B near 7th Street
A one-day closure will be required on March 15 on Avenue B near 7th Street, which neighbors Sunset Community Health Center and Immaculate Conception Church. Traffic along Avenue B will have a reduced speed limit and lane shifts in place, as crews access a manhole. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, as this could cause delays in traffic. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the lane closures.
U.S. 95, Avenue 8E (ADOT)
Crews will be working on U.S. Highway 95 and Avenue 8E starting in April. The project will reconstruct the intersection and will include a new traffic signal. It is a collaboration between ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration to improve safety and traffic flow. The project is to be completed in October 2019. ADOT will have more information available in the next few months. Drivers who are heading to Yuma Proving Ground/Quartzite can take I-8 from the 16th Street exit to the Fortuna Road exit, to Highway 95 to bypass traffic.
U.S. Highway 95 from Avenue 7E to Fortuna Road (ADOT)
ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration are also repairing the pavement on U.S. Highway 95 between Avenue 7E to Fortuna Road. The project consists of applying a rubberized chip seal coat on U.S. 95. In addition, the work includes applying a fog coat, replacing existing pavement markings and other miscellaneous work. The project is scheduled to begin in spring 2019 with completion anticipated in summer 2019.
Interstate 8 from Yuma to milepost 134 (ADOT)
ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration are repairing the pavement on Interstate 8 between Yuma and Maricopa counties. The project consists of applying a fog seal and restriping I-8 in three areas: I-8 from milepost 0.56 to 20, the second phase will cover mileposts 66 to 72 and the final phase covers mileposts 115 to 134. The project is scheduled to begin in spring 2019 with completion anticipated in summer 2019.
