Two women suspected of tagging arrested

Two Yuma women were arrested Wednesday afternoon after they were suspected of tagging on a wall in the 8400 block of South Mojave Lane.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said a reporting party gave deputies specific vehicle and suspect information. This lead to a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle in the area.

Authorities said one suspect denied any involvement but evidence on her hand matched the paint found on the wall. The second suspect admitted to spraying the wall and a stop sign.

Yuma residents, Leandra Olague, 18, and Skylene Alvarado, 19, were charged with criminal damage, arrested, and booked into the Yuma County Detention Center.

“Once again, this is an excellent example of the Yuma community and Law Enforcement working together to improve the quality of life in our community. If you see something, say something,” said Sheriff Leon Wilmot.

The city of Yuma and Yuma police receive a steady amount of graffiti reports every year. Last year, they received over 2,800 graffiti reports costing the city 200,000 dollars, according to the City of Yuma website. A graffiti hotline in Yuma is also available on their website.

This brings us to our Topic of the Day, is there any correlation between graffiti and street crime?
