Opioid use amongst youth to be discussed at community forum

Opioid use among teens has been an ongoing issue in the city of San Luis for months now. Residents will find out what they can do to prevent their child from being the next victim Thursday evening.

Campesinos Sin Fronteras is hosting the “Drugs and Delinquency” community forum to target the use of opioids amongst youth at San Luis High School Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

The San Luis Police Department (SLPD) plans to focus their presentation tonight on the progress they have made to combat the issue.

SLPD said they are currently investigating 12 cases that involve fentanyl. They added more than half of those cases involve a minor.

“We have more school resource officers that are going inside the schools and the classrooms and are explaining very thoroughly the different types of consequences of clandestinely-made fentanyl,” explained Lt. Marco Santana with SLPD.

The community will have the chance to hear from the Drug Enforcement Administration, substance abuse counselors, and even representatives from the Yuma County Prosecutor’s Office.
