Two displaced after house fire

Two people were displaced after their home caught on fire at the 300 block of South Del Mar Avenue, just before 7 a.m. Monday.

The Yuma Fire Department said fire crews arrived at the scene and found smoke coming from the backyard of 3040 South Del Mar Avenue. Firefighters found residents using garden hoses trying to extinguish a piece of furniture that was burning on the side of the house. Fire officials said the fire had already extended into the attic space through a vent. Firefighters soon located and extinguished the fire in the attic.

The damage was enclosed to the section of the home’s exterior where the piece of furniture had been burning and the section of the attic area close to the vent the fire came through, fire officials added. Power was shut down to the home and it could not be recovered without repairs.

The American Red Cross assisted two residents and a pet cat, who was able to evacuate the home safely. No injuries were reported, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
