Crane: Student reports attempted child abduction near bus stop

The Crane School District reported an attempted child abduction Friday morning, but the child’s mother is not too sure the incident was that at all.

The district said a Rancho Viejo student was at a bus stop near Chapay Street and Strand Avenue when an individual jumped out of a vehicle and attempted to grab the student.

“I don’t know it was a black car that parked there. All of a sudden the guy, the passenger, jumped out of the car. He didn’t touch him or anything but because my son ran to the house,” said Celeste, the child’s mother.

The district said the vehicle was identified as a possible black Ford Mustang with no license plate.

The mother claimed she saw the car with her own eyes.

“They got something from the trunk and they left,” said Celeste. “They were there. That’s why I don’t think it was an abduction situation, but I’m not sure.”

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said the boy reported two people being in the car. One described as a light-skinned woman, according to YCSO. The other individual is described as 5’10” with black hair and brown eyes and was wearing black clothing at the time, according to the district.

The student was not harmed and notified the school of the incident.

The Crane School District has taken action with Cocopah Tribe Police, The Yuma Police Department, and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

The district offered a suggestion to parents in regards to the alleged incident.

“If parents are available to please be with their children or child until they are actually physically picked up from the bus stop. I know that’s not always the case and parents are working so I understand, its a very unfortunate circumstance,” said Mario Hogue, Crane School District public relations.

The district has also communicated through Blackboard, email, text and social media for parents.
