Driver injured in freak accident

A man was left with serious injuries after his vehicle was impaled by irrigation sprinkler piping on County 11th Street and Avenue G early Friday morning.

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said firefighters responded to a motor vehicle incident at County 11th Street and Avenue G at 02:47 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene and found a red Ford Mustang that had wrecked into a trailer loaded with metal irrigation sprinkler piping.

Fire officials said it is unknown why the vehicle left the roadway or how the incident happened. When the vehicle was struck by the pipes on the trailer, the large pipes impaled the windshield of the vehicle and struck the driver. The driver was not inside the vehicle when authorities arrived at the scene. The driver was soon located walking east on County 11th Street about an eighth of a mile away.

The driver suffered very serious injuries to his face and neck, authorities said. He was treated by paramedics on scene and was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident.
