Local leaders weigh in on State of the Union address

The southern border was one of the topics President Trump heavily focused on in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

President Trump highlighted the crimes that occur near our border and the second wave of migrants set to hit our backyard.

Local Democrat and Yuma County supervisor Tony Reyes does not agree with the way the President portrayed the border.

“It’s obvious that he continues to utilize immigrants and demonize them to justify building a wall. All the statistics he gave, I’ve heard before. All this crisis on the border talk. It’s just talk,” said Tony Reyes, Democrat. “As I’ve said plenty of times before there is no crisis at the border,”

Reyes added that he did not think the address was unifying.

However, Gilbert Hernandez, a Colorado River Tea Party member, does not agree and thought President Trump presented a message of bipartisanship.

Hernandez also agreed with Trump’s stance on the border.

“I was born and raised in Yuma Arizona. I’ve seen a lot of stuff happening. I’ve seen that we did the border wall in Yuma and that has prevented a lot of drug smuggling and illegal aliens coming through,” said Hernandez.

Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema also weighed in on President Trump’s points on jobs and our economy.

“There is so much we agree on as Americans. We must cut red tape for our businesses, grow jobs for the American people, and work together to bridge manufactured partisan divides and put our country first. I will continue to stand up for Arizona against this unnecessary trade war that’s hurting our economy. I’ll keep working with anyone to get results for Arizona families,” said U.S. Senator Sinema.
