Driver hospitalized following Jeep rollover

A woman was hospitalized Friday afternoon after her Jeep SUV rolled over the canal bank on Avenue D and County 16th 1/2 Street, fire officials said.

Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said firefighters were called to a single-vehicle rollover at 2:17 p.m. on Avenue D and County 16th 1/2 Street. Upon arrival, a black Jeep SUV was found on its side on an irrigation canal’s west bank. Officials said the woman driving the Jeep climbed through the windshield, exited the vehicle, and sat on the irrigation canal’s west bank.

Fire officials added that the vehicle was northbound at the time of the accident. A witness told authorities that the vehicle went off the east side of Avenue D and allegedly overcorrected. The Jeep struck the east side of the canal bank, causing it to launch over the canal. It then struck the canal’s west bank and flipped on its side on the dirt road along the canal.

The driver, who complained of neck and shoulder pain, was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

An investigation is currently underway by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.
