Yuma BP agent dies in traffic crash
Yuma Sector Border Patrol has confirmed that one of their agents died in a crash Monday night.
They said that 36-year-old Border Patrol Agent Sergio Lopez was involved in a crash that took his life.
The California Highway Patrol said officers responded to the incident on Monday at 10:55 p.m. near Ogilby Road, south of State Route 78.
CHP said Agent Lopez was driving a 2018 Ford Focus heading northbound on Ogilby when, for unknown reasons, Lopez drove off the east roadway edge onto the dirt shoulder. As a result, the vehicle rolled over.
Agent Lopez was wearing his seatbelt during the incident.
Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Lopez was an agent at the Blythe station. Border Patrol said he had served as an agent for more than ten years.
Mario Campos, president of the local chapter for the National Border Patrol Council released the following statement:
“No words can describe how sorry we all are for the loss of Sergio Lopez. Sergio was not only a fellow Border Patrol Agent. He was a Union Steward and a close friend. On behalf of the National Border Patrol Council and Local 2595, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the Lopez family. ”
