Car burglaries up in Yuma neighborhoods
Yuma police said they have seen a total of eight car burglaries and attempts in the neighborhoods surrounding Arizona Western College.
One resident handed over video of one suspect unsuccessfully trying to get into a car at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
The incident happened near 26th Lane and Cavatina Avenue.
One resident is now on edge.
“It’s been very scary because this neighborhood has usually been pretty quiet. To know that it’s becoming unsafe kind of makes me feel uneasy, especially with three little girls,” said Danielle Alegria.
Police said they have identified the suspect but are not releasing his name at this time.
YPD offered this advice to those who call that surrounding area home.
“Lock your vehicles. Even if you lock your vehicles, do not leave weapons. If you carry a weapon in your vehicle it’s legal, its okay. Don’t leave it in your vehicle overnight because if somebody breaks into that vehicle, they’re going to steal it. Don’t leave laptops, don’t leave purses, don’t leave anything of value in your car,” said Sergeant Lori Franklin, YPD.
Franklin added there have been two attempted car burglaries and six car burglaries in the last two weeks, leaving the victims with a total of $11,000 in lost valuables.
“Not to be brand specific, but the Ring doorbells, the camera doorbells are becoming quite popular. People are getting really good video. It is really good video because the clearer the picture, the easier it is for people to identify them,” added Sergeant Franklin.
