Woman travels to aid migrants seeking asylum in San Luis

One local woman has taken it upon herself to assist those waiting in line for a shot at asylum in San Luis Rio Colorado.

Alexa Hermoso, 23, has now visited the line of more than 300 people twice to offer a helping hand.

As Hermoso approached the line smiling and excited children ran up to her because the recognized her and wanted to pick out a new item of clothing.

One child did not even have shoes on because she told us her family left everything at home in Guerrero, a n indigenous town in Mexico.

“My mom left all my shoes at my house,” said Yasmine, a child in line outside of the San Luis Port of Entry.

Hermoso says she is helping because she can relate to the children. She says nine years ago she too was waiting for her chance to enter the U.S.

“When I was a baby, I was living in Mexico too. My mom, she was always working. She was a single mom. We didn’t have a lot of things. We didn’t have sometimes even food. I remember my mom she didn’t have a lot of things. I was always asking for more. So I can understand a little bit how they feel right now,” said Hermoso.

Since then, Hermoso has been approved to be in the U.S. Legally.

The children camping outside said the donations make them happy.

“Happy” explained Yasmine.

“The people are helping us,” added David, a child in line outside of the San Luis Port of Entry.

Her first trip to this line was on January 12, when she brought over $60 worth of donuts to the migrants.
