CalFresh benefits might be unavailable in March

Imperial Valley residents who rely on CalFresh food assistance might have to be careful about how they spend their benefits next month.

The Department of Social Services announced that the looming government shutdown could mean benefits might not be available in March for residents who participate in CalFresh.

According to the department, this affects over a third of the county’s population.

Javier Duran, the Deputy Director of the Imperial County Department of Social Services, said, “It’s very grave. I mean if we do lose that funding in March, that’s telling you 41,000 people are going to go without ways to eat in March. [This is a] v ery big concern for us.”

Residents who use CalFresh will be receiving both January and February benefits this month, but Duran said they have to budget wisely.

“Be mindful that these are your February benefits and do not assume that you’re going to get anything else in February. Be very aware of your balance every day. And go and shop accordingly,” said Duran.

The department has never experienced anything like this before.

Duran Said, “It’s something that’s rather new for us. It’s something that we’re very concerned about.”

Officials are looking for answers on what to do next if the government shutdown continues.

“Really waiting for guidance from the federal government and the state. We’re in a quandary really. What’s going to happen? We don’t know,” Duran added.

Residents should not expect changes to their CalFresh benefits for the month of January and February.
