Residents express concern after fatal home invasion
Residents are speaking out to express their concerns after a woman was killed and three people were injured in a home invasion Thursday morning.
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the case and detectives were seen at the home Friday morning, according to concerned neighbors who heard gunshots when the incident happened.
Verra Ramiro, the neighbor right next to the home, said the owner warned the intruders by flickering his lights before opening fire.
“We heard gunshots, but we thought it was New Year’s celebrations or people just firing shots because they do that in this area a lot, it’s normal,” said Ramiro.
Residents in the neighborhood say it is typically quiet and free of criminal activity, until now.
“Me and my daughter do feel afraid after what happened because there’s been other cases where people have showed up in the middle of the night. We want to ask police for more patrolling the area and more lighting because you can’t see anything here at night,” said Leticia Robles, a resident in the area.
The suspects were identified as follows:
Jessica Aynes, 28, of Yuma, was pronounced dead at Yuma Regional Medical Center. Next of kin has been notified. Aynes was convicted of attempted burglary in the second degree back in 2014.
Thirty-six-year-old Edith Guerrero, of Somerton, was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound and later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital. She was convicted of being affiliated with a criminal street gang by Yuma County Superior Court.
Jaden James, 18, of Mesa, Ariz., was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound.
Twenty-seven-year-old Leonardo Gonzalez, of Yuma, was self-transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center and was later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital. Gonzalez has two convictions tied to drug paraphernalia, both in 2017.
YCSO is currently investigating the case.
