San Luis High School places in statewide organ donor drive

San Luis High School has reason to celebrate as they placed second in a statewide organ donor drive.

The program is part of HOSA, that stands for Health Occupational Students of America. HOSA is a student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Health Science Education. The organization focuses on promoting career opportunities in the health care industry and enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

In Arizona, high schools across the state participate in HOSA and San Luis High placed second in the number of students they registered as organ and tissue donors. San Luis has placed in all three years that the drive has taken place while also winning first place last year.

“We get recognized at the state leadership conference in Tucson in April. There was probably about 50 if not more schools involved and so, for us to be able to make San Luis shine like that and that the kids are willing to step up and be organ donors, was a very prideful thing for all of us,” said Kim Elg, EMS instructor at San Luis High School.

The donor network bases its winners off of categories. San Luis was a part of the large school category.

Being a licensed paramedic, Ms. Elg knows all too well how vital it is to have organ donors readily available and for her student to place means a lot.
