Former Yuma cop convicted of rape in San Diego
A jury found a former Yuma Police Department police officer accused of raping a woman in San Diego guilty on rape charges.
ABC 10 News (KGTV) in San Diego reported that a jury found 34-year-old Jared Elkins guilty of four felony counts that include forcible rape, oral copulation by force and sexual penetration by force. He was not guilty on four other charges related to the intoxication of a victim.
Following the reading of the verdict, Elkins was taken into custody. The judge has set a sentencing hearing for March 8, 2019, at 9 a.m. Elkins faces 14 years in prison.
“Very pleased with this jury and their verdicts,” Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox said.
Elkins was accused of rape by his now ex-wife’s cousin inside her home located in the neighborhood of Kensington last year. The night of the incident, the 23-year-old woman said that the family was watching a movie while drinking beer and wine after going out to dinner.
“I was terrified. I knew that he knew he was raping me. I saw his gun in the next room earlier in the night. I believed he would not only kill me but everyone else in my family!” the victim testified.
KGTV reported that the woman said he raped her over and over in her home. Elkin’s then-wife was asleep across the hall the night of the incident.
During Elkins’ testimony, he claimed the sexual intercourse was consensual and the alleged victim wasn’t too intoxicated to know what was happening.
“I felt like sexual vibes were going on between us,” said Jared Elkins.
Both the defense and prosecuting attorney brought in medical experts to discuss the effects of medicine, ones prescribed to the alleged victim when mixing with alcohol.
Toxicology reports showed two prescribed medications, both Adderall and Clonazepam, were present in her urine sample.
Her blood alcohol level was .092 following the alleged rape.
