Port of Entry expansion project receives federal grant
The vision of completing the expansion to the Calexico East Port of Entry is closer to becoming a reality thanks to a $20 million federal grant.
Many said the grant marks a victory for the valley.
Mark Baza, Executive Director of Imperial County Transportation Commission said, “It’s a huge win for Imperial County. We don’t get this large of an award. We haven’t been as successful for this large of an award here in Imperial County.”
The funds will allow them to continue the next phase of expanding the port of entry.
“We’re going to add two northbound truck lanes and two northbound auto lanes on this bridge. That bridge is currently a choke point leading to the port of entry. And this will be a great fix to it.”
Baza said the environment will also benefit from more lanes being added.
“Relieving the congestion helps of reduce the emissions in idling vehicles at the border crossings. That’s a big deal.”
Supporters also said expanding the port of entry will boost the valley’s economy.
“We have $16 billion in exports that travel through this port of entry. So they’re a critical part of certainly Mexico’s economy. But they’re a critical part of Imperial County and the US economy.”
While they’re still $5-10 million short on completing the project the Transportation Commission will continue looking for funds.
“We’ll be pursuing every opportunity. Whether it’s the federal government or the state of California. There are discretionary grant opportunities that we have already tapped into. We feel very confident being able to get the shortfall to complete the construction of this project,” Baza added.
Baza said they hope to complete the expansion of the port of entry by the end of 2021.
