Good Samaritan saves sheriff

A New York sheriff targeted in a bizarre roadside attack was able to arrest a knife-wielding man Wednesday thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan.

New York State Police say 48-year-old Lynn Hall attacked Wyoming County Sheriff Greg Rudolph, threw him to the ground and threatened him with a knife.

Hall is charged with the attempted murder.

Around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jack Harzynski was helping deliver newspapers when he passed flashing lights. That’s when he looked over and saw two men on the ground.

“I turned around, I got out of my car and as I got out I heard ‘help, help, help, help,’ and I ran up to him,” said Harzynski.

Sheriff Rudolph was on the ground.

Rudolph was on his way to work in uniform, in an unmarked police car when troopers say Lynn Hall pulled up behind him, flashing his lights to get him to pull over.

When Sheriff Rudolph did, troopers say Hall attacked him, reached for his gun and eventually ended up on top of the sheriff with a knife threatening to take his life.

“I said, ‘hey, what the heck are you doing…’. The guy turned around and looked at me and I saw the knife in his hand and he was like hovering over the sheriff… and then as soon as he turned his head back, I just lunged at him, grabbed him and threw him into the snowbank farther and fell with him, and then he got up with the knife again,” said Harzynski. “He didn’t say a word to me and then at that moment the sheriff got up and tackled him and got him down on his belly and got him cuffed.”
