Officials warn against recent water device thefts

The City of Yuma is advising business owners to increase their security following recent reports of water device thefts.

According to a press release, Yuma police have received about 20 reports of water device thefts that have increased despite its news coverage and public awareness.

Officials said the thefts happen in the late-night or early morning hours. The thefts involve cutting the pipes holding the device, taking the device, and copper pipes. The incidents have not been tracked at a specific area in Yuma. Victims have been businesses and one school.

Backflow devices are made of brass and protect the city’s water system from contamination. Authorities have not made any contact with any suspect(s) yet so the motive for the thefts remains unknown.

Copper in the pipes is attached to these devices. Officials believe it may be one source of perceived value for thieves.

Yuma officials recommend that businesses with backflow devices take measures to avoid being the next victim.

Many businesses install a cage around their devices and lock that cage. Removing or cutting back on vegetation that may be in front of the device may improve visibility and prevent theft. Setting ample security cameras in areas where they cannot be tampered with may also stop thieves or provide data that can help police catch the thieves.

The Yuma Police Department encourages anyone with any information about these backflow device thefts to please call the Yuma Police Department at 928-373-4700 or 78-Crime at (928) 782-7463 to remain anonymous.
