7 arrests made at Wellton and Blythe immigration checkpoints Wednesday

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents seized nearly $178,000 in methamphetamine made seven arrests Wednesday.

The first arrest made at the Interstate 8 Immigration Checkpoint led to two arrests, according to Customs and Border Protection.

The driver, 20, claimed to be the U.S. citizen and the passenger,40, offered a green card, according to CBP.

CBP said the two were sent for a secondary inspection and discovered the green card was fake and the passenger was from Mexico.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested, according to CBP.

The second arrest led to $177,540 worth of methamphetamine to be seized, according to CBP.

CBP said agents found 52 packages under the rocker panel in the vehicle.

A nine-year-old girl was in the vehicle while the female driver, 28, had the drugs in the vehicle, according to CBP.

CBP said the woman was arrested on drug smuggling charges and the child is in Child Protective Services.

At the Highway 78 Checkpoint in Blythe, California, four people were arrested.

CBP said one U.S. citizen and a permanent resident are accused of smuggling two Mexican nationals en route to Los Angeles, California.

Agents also claim they found a loaded .45 caliber pistol in the vehicle.

The Interstate 8 Immigration Checkpoint and the Highway 78 Immigration Checkpoint are both a part of the Yuma Sector.
