Mom who drowned baby in tub found insane, spared prison
Jurors have decided a California woman twice convicted of drowning her baby daughter in a bathtub was insane at the time of the killing and will be spared a prison sentence.
Lucero Carrera was first convicted in 2015 and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison — but her conviction was overturned on appeal.
She was convicted again this year, but the jury deadlocked in the sanity phase of the trial.
City News Service reports a new jury on Wednesday reached a verdict that Carrera was not guilty by reason of insanity.
Mental health experts will determine whether she should be sent to a state mental health facility or be treated as an outpatient.
Carrera was living with her mother in Santa Ana when she held her 2-month-old daughter under water.
