Man accused of attacking officer with taser takes plea agreement
The man accused of striking a Yuma Police officer with his own taser plead guilty in exchange for a plea agreement inside a Yuma courtroom Thursday.
Gilbert Gallegos, who was in custody, changed his plea to guilty in front of Judge Roger Nelson to one amended count of attempted aggravated assault.
Gallegos could potentially face anywhere from two years to eight years in prison if convicted.
According to the agreement, probation would be available with a $150,000 fine.
During Thursday’s court proceedings, the court read the factual basis for Gallegos to agree to. According to the court document, on Sept. 5, 2018, Gallegos struck an officer in the face.
Gallegos then grabbed the officer’s taser and shot the officer in his face.
The attorney representing Gallegos told the judge his client doesn’t recall punching the officer in the face.
However, Gallegos agreed to the factual basis provided by the court.
Gallegos’ sentencing is set for Jan. 3.
