First flu-related death reported in Imperial County
The Imperial County Public Health Department reported the first flu-related death of the 2018-19 flu season on Thursday.
The individual was between the age of 60 to 69 and had underlying health issues, according to ICPHD.
Laboratory tests concluded positive for the influenza A virus and according to hospital records, the man did not receive a flu shot this season.
The ICPHD said the individual was transferred to a San Diego area hospital and later died.
Dr. Stephen Munday, County Health Officer stated, “Each year, the flu circulates in our community. Last year flu related illnesses were responsible for seven deaths in Imperial County. Vaccination against influenza is strongly recommended. All persons six months of age and older, including health-care personnel, should receive a flu shot now if they have not yet received one this flu season.”
Influenza is an acute respiratory illness spread from infected persons to others. Signs and symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches.
Flu shots are available at the Public Health Department on a walk-in basis during regular hours and with local physicians, community clinics and local pharmacies.
Some people, such as older adults, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at higher risk for suffering serious complications from the flu.
