Police: Kofa HS student in critical condition

UPDATE

The Kofa High School student that was struck by a vehicle in the 1000 block of Somerton Avenue early Tuesday morning has been identified.

The student, identified by family as 16-year-old Nicholas Garcia, was on his way to the bus stop, according to the family.

Somerton Police Department said Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at 6:50 a.m. An investigation revealed that a 32-year-old Somerton resident, driving a late model pick-up truck, was heading north on the 1060 block of North Somerton Avenue. According to SPD, Garcia was jaywalking at the time that he was struck by the pick-up truck while trying to cross N. Somerton Ave.

Authorities said the 16-year-old boy was treated at the scene for a possible internal head injury and was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was later flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital due to an internal head bleed.

Alcohol and speed were not a factor in this case, according to SPD.

The incident remains under investigation.
