Former volunteer keeps up Thanksgiving Dinner tradition

Over 350 needy people, including families, veterans and homeless were served some love this Thanksgiving.

Organizer Mario Castaneda said it’s important to show love and appreciation to everyone in the community during the start of this holiday season, especially those going through hard times.

Castaneda said he was originally a volunteer eight years prior in the Thanksgiving Dinner event. When the original organizer could not continue after the first year, he took over. He said it’s become a mission for him and for dozens of local volunteers.

“There are people that don’t have the luxury of having Thanksgiving dinner, so that’s why we decided that we could do that for people that don’t have that privilege,” Castaneda said.

The event was organized by Castaneda’s Hacienda Scholarship Fund of Brawley.
