Guatemalan father and son try to cross into the United States
Casa Del Migrante is a shelter where thousands of migrants come in and out year-round in search of a better life for them and their families just North of the border.
President of the shelter, Martin Salgado said that they have seen an increase in migrants come through the shelter, especially right now in this season.
“Right now, 15 to 20 of migrants are arriving daily. Some days there are very few and then there are other days, there are days that there’s so many,” said Salgado.
According to Casa Del Migrante , they have seen an increase in migrants coming from Honduras arriving at the shelter.
“We have people like Javier Lopez from Guatemala who tried to cross and he fractured his foot trying to do so, and well anyway that he could he had to make his way back here,” said Salgado.
The economic need along with organized crime in Guatemala is what has forced people like Javier to leave his country.
“I came with my child and it took us about five days to get to Mexico, but I left behind my only son and he was able to pass,” said Lopez.
Javier has been staying at Casa Del Migrante for a month and he plans to return home after he’s cleared from the hospital. For now, the shelter told News 11 that there are preparing for the arrival of the migrant caravan that is expected to arrive in just a few weeks.
