Day of the Dead memorial preserves memories and culture

An El Centro resident is keeping the memory of others and her culture alive on Day of the Dead.

Nina Duggen proudly offers her 6 th Annual Day of the Dead memorial in honor of dozens of local families who have passed away.

There are hundreds of pictures and items on colorful displays, many photos donated by the community. Among the many memories there are local personalities, leaders, veterans, teachers, family members and even one or two bad boys whom Duggen said she loves anyway.

Duggen said her memorial is a way of preserving her heritage, culture and family love. She plans to put together a committee to take over in the future when she can no longer continue.

“There’s some people here who have given me pictures and I make a board for them. But, basically all these boards, I’ve done them. I put my heart into them. It’s just to remember, because we forget where we came from,” Duggen said.

The free display is at 133 East Brighton in El Centro open till Sunday evening.
