18 immigrants found inside refrigerated semi-truck trailer

Border Patrol agents arrested the driver of a semi-truck who tried to smuggle 18 undocumented immigrants at the Interstate 19 immigration checkpoint north of Nogales Monday, officials said.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents sent the 47-year-old driver of a semi-truck to secondary inspection after a CBP alerted to an odor it is trained to detect. Agents discovered two Guatemalan nationals and 16 Mexican nationals, ranging from ages 15 to 40, inside the refrigerated trailer that was 36 degrees.

Authorities seized the semi-truck and arrested the driver along with the 18 undocumented immigrants, who were processed for immigration violations. The driver faces federal smuggling charges.
