Candidates differ on how to improve area

Imperial Valley College hosted a candidates’ forum on Saturday giving candidates a chance to share where they stand on important local issues.

Candidates for Supervisor District 1 talked about their main differences in trying to help the area. Incumbent John Renison said current county programs aimed at promoting economic growth should be continued. He talked about his many years of experience in local leadership as a reason for him to continue his district supervisory work.

Challenger Jesus Eduardo Escobar said Renison’s years of work has not given the valley the prosperity or growth it should have. He said it is time for a new approach.

Escobar said the area needs more industry. Renison said they don’t need more retailers. Local water rights was another key issue in their debate in which they seemed to agree on the role Imperial Irrigation District plays over that.

“We need to make sure that the IID keeps those rights and trusts to protect us, the valley, and to make sure nobody does a grab,” Renison said.

“Do I agree that the water rights should be kept in IID trust? Abso-freaking-lutely! [sic] That is non-negotiable ,” Escobar said.

Renison has served locally as Calexico City Council and District 1 Supervisor for over 20 years combined. Escobar is a local businessman and currently a Calexico City Council Member.
