Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio files libel lawsuit against The New York Times

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio filed a lawsuit against The New York Times and writer Michelle Cottle for defamation on Tuesday.

The lawsuit is over Cottle’s op-ed from August 2018 titled “Well, at least Sheriff Joe isn’t going to Congress – Arpaio’s loss in Arizona’s Senate Republican primary is a fitting end to the public life of a truly sadistic man.”

The publication came after Martha McSally defeated Arpaio in the primary election for U.S. Senate.

In the suit, Arpaio claims the article contains false, defamatory statements. The article discusses the former Sheriff’s practices including racial profiling.

A Federal Judge found Arpaio guilty of criminal content of court for his actions as Sheriff before President Donald Trump pardoned him in 2017.

The complaint was filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

It also said the op-ed could damage his reputation for a future run for Senate in 2020, according to the lawsuit.

Arpaio is seeking $147,500,000 in damages and costs.
