Local groups assist immigrants released from detention centers

Hundreds of undocumented immigrants looking for asylum in the US were dispersed throughout Arizona communities over the last few days, according to NBC News.

The Yuma Refugee Ministry has assisted close to 400 people in Yuma since U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released hundreds from detention centers, according to the Ministry.

The immigrants left with a date to report back to ICE and ankle bracelets to track their location.

Rosa, an immigrant from Guatemala came to the US to escape the danger she said she faced at home.

“I crossed [into] the country without documents because like I used to work they thought that maybe I had a lot of money or that I could pay a rescue. To save my life and my son’s life I came here,” said Rosa.

She also explained her experience inside a detention center.

“He said, ‘why did we cross if we have no opportunity, no dreams, no nothing?’ When he told me that I felt very bad because they aren’t giving the opportunity to the people that really need it.”

What is left unanswered is whether or not those immigrants seeking asylum will receive it.
