Citizenship classes available to the community in Yuma

The Yuma County Library is offering free citizenship classes to the community on Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

Adult Coordinator Lourdes Rose says the library is already in motion for Hispanic Heritage Month and they are encouraging to community to participate.

The classes prepare those taking the U.S. citizenship test and the instructor is always determined to help them pass.

Rose believes the citizenship classes are a key factor to bringing the community together but also to the high percentage of Hispanics we have in Yuma.

“We have a high rate of Hispanic people in the community and the Yuma County and most of them were interested in applying for citizenship, unfortunately there’s not that many programs available and some require certain investment, so the library in an effort for our community decided to put together the program,” said Lourdes Rose.

Success stories from students are always a push for those teaching and staff members are always excited to see how far every student has come after the classes.

“We encourage them to approach our staff to let them know about them participating in the program and being able to achieve maybe even a GED certificate, a job, or even citizenship. There are some people that were granted citizenship through our programs,” said Rose.

The YCL offers a variety of programs and some are even in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
