No firearms recovered yet from arrested students

Brawley Police said no firearms have been recovered yet from three local high school students arrested for allegedly making criminal threats.

Cmdr. Brett Houser said, “We have not recovered any weapons for this incident, yet. We continue to investigate. And thankfully, from what we can tell, they did not have access to weapons, but we cannot confirm that there were no weapons at all. We continue to look for those.”

The three freshmen, 14 years of age each, are in custody for allegedly planning to shoot up the school this week. Two were arrested on Sunday at their homes and one on Monday at the police station when he was brought by his parents for questioning.

No charges filed yet until the investigation is completed, but serious charges are being considered.

“Conspiracy to commit criminal threats, an act of serious violence, possibly a shooting, was the concern. Procedurally, the defendants were booked in the juvenile hall, and the court process will take place,” Houser said.

He said making threats is no joking matter; it could be a felony charge.

“Just like you can’t yell fire in a theater, or bomb in an airport, you can’t joke about shootings or other acts of violence on a student body, or anywhere near schools, or in public areas, for that matter,” Houser said.

Police said parents can play an important role in preventing kids from getting into this kind of trouble by talking to them about the consequences of making criminal threats.
