$6.3 million in state funds awarded to Imperial County
Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia presented a check for six million dollars in state funds to the Imperial County Board of Supervisors. A new water infrastructure in Seely and a public safety facility in Niland can now be fully funded.
Assemblymember Garcia said this shows a commitment to addressing needs in the community by county officials. “This is a perfect example of the good work, you know the representatives here locally. And going after available money to addressing some of the critical needs of the county,” said Garcia.
Replacing an old fire station will improve response time for first responders.
Imperial County Fire Chief Alfredo Estrada said, “It’s an outdated facility right now. They’re in a mobile facility. So it’s not a permanent structure. But the old facility is about 30,40 years old. Now they’ll have a brand new station.”
A strong bond between local and state representatives is crucial to receiving state funds. Assemblymember Garcia said, “That relationship is critical. In order to be able to communicate the opportunities that are coming out of Sacramento and making sure they’re making their way here.”
Having state representatives who know the area increases their chances of getting grants. Deputy CEO of Imperial County Esperanza Colio-Warren said, “Eduardo knows the area very well. He has walked through that community so he understands the needs of the community. ”
The county hopes construction on both facilities will be completed by the end of next year.
