Teen arrested after attempting to smuggle fentanyl pills

A local teen was arrested in a failed attempt to smuggle a quarter pound of fentanyl pills into the United States on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The 16-year-old boy was referred for additional questioning when he attempted to enter the U.S. from Mexico and a canine alerted to an odor it is trained to detect.

CBP said officers discovered a pair of duct taped packages of fentanyl strapped around the teen’s thighs.

The fentanyl has a street value of $10,500.

CBP officers seized the drugs and the 16-year-old was arrested and turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
