Yuma residents are not happy about a rezoning request

A Yuma-area neighborhood meeting had several residents upset about a rezoning request in their area.

Saguaro Desert Land Inc. requested to rezone land near Avenue 9E and 24th Street in Yuma. They are asking for the land to be classified as a medium density residential district rather than an agriculture district.

This is the second time since 2016 the company has requested to rezone this area. The first time was in 2016 when a special election overturned the Yuma City Council’s vote to allow the area to be rezoned.

The representative from Saguaro Desert Land Inc. did not share exactly what they plan to put on the land if the request is granted.

He did say that his client intends to consider all options that are available to him and even read a list of the options during the meeting.

Residents are still concerned about any type of development being built in the area.

” The lot of land bounders with the county. So, for example, the traffic engineers need to take into consideration up to the city limit, but not take into consideration [Avenue] 9E which falls in the county. Traffic flow, having to make a U-turn on a down slope . They’re all asking for problems,” explained Luis Arroyo.

The concerns that residents addressed Wednesday night will be put into a report that will go to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The Commission will review the report next month.
