Disaster relief shelter training in the wake of Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence is currently making it’s way through the east coast and several volunteers from Yuma have made it down to the Carolinas to help. News 11 has been following this story and has the latest on a training happening this weekend for those interested in helping out with the relief efforts.

The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross will be having a “Just in time” free shelter training for people 18 years and older. This is a great opportunity for residents of Yuma county to learn basic skills of shelter operations during a disaster relief operation. This training will show people how to set up a shelter, process clients, assist with reuniting people with their loved ones along with learn how to communicate with other Red Cross Chapters across the country. Eli Revas with the Red Cross of Yuma shares why a training like this is so crucial.

“The reason why it’s important here in Yuma is because we don’t know what disasters we face. We could have multi-family house fire or for example there may be a day where we have our own flood that we have to deal with so it’s important to get the community involved and teach them how to be prepared for any and all types of emergencies, ” said Eli Revas, the Disaster action team response leader for the Red Cross of Yuma.

The training will occur Saturday, September 15th at the Community Christian Church on Highway 95 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. For more information, please call (928) 240-8220
