New proposition could benefit the Imperial Valley
Progress is being made to improve the conditions of the Salton Sea.
In the most recent election, voters approved $200 million in water bonds to begin restoring the sea with another possible $200 million coming if Prop 3 passes in November.
I f voters decide yes on Prop 3, the ten-year plan to restore the Salton Sea is fully financed.
Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia of California said, “Proposition 3 brings us closer to a fully funded management plan. In the range of $480 million, therefore, there’s no excuse anymore. Addressing the problem is an urgent one. We have a plan, we have money, we must get to work.”
However, voters might have second thoughts because it means more money from their pockets. “Bonds do affect the wallets of Californians and it is money that has to be paid back,” said Phillip Johnson, Salton Sea Authority Assistant Executive Director .
Restorin g the Salton Sea will better the air quality which is one of the worst in the state. Air Pollution Control Officer Matt Dessert said, “And the sooner that’s done, the sooner we’re going to be protected on windier days from these wind episodes, from future exposed playa as the water recedes.”
One of the driving forces behind Prop 3 is the health care of the community.
“It is not okay to have respiratory problems with seven of 10 children suffering from bad air that they have to breathe. The Salton Sea is a problem that adds to that. And we must take action very fast,” said Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia.
