Humane Society of Yuma goes solar

The Humane Society of Yuma is hoping to raise $30,000 in order to start building solar panels and save on electric costs.

Since the beginning of construction of the shelter, the Humane Society had envisioned installing solar panels.

Though it had not been in the budget during the beginning of construction, a generous donation spurred the beginning of hope on putting in the solar panels.

The shelter has collected the majority of the cost through various donors; however, they are looking to the community to raise the rest of the funds required for the down payment.

The Humane Society of Yuma pays up to $7,200 per month on electricity costs.

The Humane Society hopes to save on their electric bill by being able to generate the majority of their electricity from the panels rather than “the grid”.

The shelter invests about $300 per animal from taking them in as strays to getting them adopted, whether it be vaccinations or spay and neuter costs.

Though the panels only cover about 60% of electric costs, that money that would have been spent on electricity can now be put towards the animals and making the shelter more energy efficient.
