Single-engine plane crashes near Prescott Airport; 1 killed

Authorities are using dental records to identify a pilot who died after a small plane crashed short of a runway at Prescott A irport .

Prescott police say the one person aboard the single-engine plane was killed when it crashed about a quarter-mile (0.4 kilometer ) from the approach end of a runway Wednesday night.

A photograph of the crash site appears charred wreckage in a field adjacent to the airport.

The Yavapai County Medical Examiner is expected to confirm the pilot’s identity by next week after checking dental records.

Authorities say the pilot had left Prescott and was intending to return to the airport.

The cause of the crash isn’t immediately known and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating.
