YUHSD parents could save up to $500 with new meal program implementation

The Yuma Union High School District will be participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. The program initiates students will be able to receive meals at no cost without having to go through the application process.

Several parents in the area expressed that they feel relieved to not have to go through the application process. One parent shared he still pays for his children lunch and it can get pricey.

According to Grace Pruit, the student nutrition director, families in the area are saving up to $560 per 180-day school year. Pruit also shared that 60 percent of students would qualify by federal standards.

Schools included in this program are Cibola High School, Gila Ridge High School, Kofa High School, San Luis High School, Vista Alternative High School, and Yuma High School. Through the Special Assistance Program, healthy meals will be offered every school day at no cost to students due to the district implementing Provision 2 for the 2018-19 school year.

Students are able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a household application. The application was something every parent who wanted to apply for lunch and breakfast
