MCSO release graphic bodycam video of dog attack on K9 officer Tarzan

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released body camera video from an incident that left a residential dog dead after a deputy shot it, following a fight with K9 officer, Tarzan.

Deputies responded to a home in Youngtown, Arizona on August 4 for a disturbance report. MCSO said deputies responded to the home three times in the past 60 days. Deputies were dispatched twice to the area that evening, according to a MCSO press release.

Deputies on the scene were looking for an occupant who fled from the back of the home.

A MCSO deputy and his K9 partner, Tarzan, walked down an public alleyway and came across an open fence.

A pit bull named Chevy ran out of the yard and began to attack K9 Tarzan, biting and locking onto Tarzan’s face and chest. The deputy gave the owner commands to restrain the dog but failed to do so, according to MCSO.

The deputy fired his weapon, killing Chevy.

“These circumstances are extremely dangerous and challenging. MCSO K-9 Tarzan is a member of our organization, no different than any deputy providing public safety in our community. Once his life was threatened and in jeopardy, lethal force was justifiable to stop the assault. Although we have empathy for the resident of the home and sympathy for the loss of the residential dog, a secured yard and propery restrained pet would have prevented this tragedy,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said.

Tarzan is expected to recover.

An internal investigation pending, MSCO said.
