Record-breaking electricity demand could stress the power grid
Imperial Irrigation District wants the community to take it easy on their power usage during the current heat wave.
IID is asking the community to watch their power usage on peak hours in order to prevent too much stress on the power grid, which could create unforeseen problems.
IID Communications Specialist Robert Schettler said they have backup systems but nothing is fail-safe. He recommends reducing power usage by using fans, window sunscreens and setting the thermostat at 78 degrees. He also recommends to not do laundry or use major appliances during the peak hours between 4 and 8 p.m.
IID issued a press release saying the district is setting a new peak electricity demand of over 1,000 megawatts this week during the hours of 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“We have adequate resources to handle whatever energy load demand there is, but, as there’s more stress on the grid, if we can curtail some of the usage it would help. As more electrons are being demanded on the system things wear and tear,” Schettler said.
