DPS trooper killed and two injured in Interstate 10 shooting
UPDATE
A DPS trooper was killed Wednesday evening after attempting to apprehend a man suspected of throwing things at cars on Interstate 10 in Phoenix.
The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Issac D. King from Avondale, Ariz.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said Trooper Dalin Dorris responded to the scene at 10:17 p.m. and made contact with King. Troopers Sean Rodecap and Tyler Edenhofer arrived shortly after. The three troopers tried to apprehend the suspect and an altercation began.
Two Goodyear police officers were also at the scene attempting to take the suspect into custody.
Authorities said King somehow got control of Rodecap’s gun during the fight and fired two shots at two of the troopers. One shot struck Dorris in the shoulder and another shot struck Edenhofer that ultimately killed him. Rodecap also sustained injuries during the fight.
Trooper’s Dorris and Rodecap were transported to a Valley hospital for treatment and were released.
Tyler Edenhofer graduated from the DPS Academy in May and was also a U.S. Navy veteran.
Edenhofer was going to be assigned to Quartzite, in District 4, which is headquartered in Yuma.
King is in custody and was treated at a Valley hospital. Arizona Department of Public Safety director Frank Milstead said that King was taking medication for anxiety and depression and had no criminal background.
“We’ve talked to his parents, his mother particularly who has been cooperative and thought he was in the backyard during this event. She said about 9:30 he’d been outside on the trampoline,” Milstead added.

Arizona’s public safety director says a rookie state trooper still in training was fatally shot and a second trooper was wounded in a fight with a suspect along a highway in a Phoenix suburb.
Col. Frank Milstead says the trooper killed late Wednesday night, Tyler Edenhofer (Ee’-den-hoff-er), graduated from the Department of Public Safety academy in May.
Milstead said motorists on Interstate 10 reported a male suspect was throwing things at vehicles and that a fight began when troopers made contact with the suspect.
Department spokesman Raul Garcia says the wounded trooper was treated at a hospital for a shoulder wound and released.
The suspect was taken into custody but Garcia did not identify him.
Garcia says a third trooper was also injured but not from a gunshot.
