All inclusive park in Calexico recognized as model other cities could follow
Adrian Cordova playground park in Calexico, was recognized as an example other cities could look up to when it comes to building parks for people of all kinds of abilities. Taking inputs from the locals, rides are built with wheel chair access, and children with special needs are given access to stimulation areas with music and sounds.
Thanks to a grant of over one hundred thousand dollars from the California Park and Recreation Society, the city designed an all inclusive park for everyone to enjoy. “We really looked at the need in the community, the demographics of the community as well as the project that was…desired to be put into the ground. And Calexico rose to the top,” Stephanie Stephens, Executive Director California Park and Recreation Society.
Parks like this, leave a lasting impression for children to stay active. Stephens said, “If you think about a local park like this, it’s really the gateway to larger parks. And larger, healthy and active living in the future. We also know that when children come to parks like this and learn to love and enjoy that, they’re going to carry those healthy, active life styles throughout their entire life.”
One city official says, this could lead to Calexico making more upgrades to their parks. Lily Falomir, Public Works Manager said, “Since we were recognized, hopefully that can open more doors for us to continue getting funding and making more improvements throughout city parks here in the city.”
