Arizona Educators United group gathers to collect signatures

Arizona Educators United group gathered at the Prison Hill Brewing Company today.

The group aimed to get petitions from the Yuma community in order to ensure that their proposition for better funding in education will make the ballot in November.

After receiving over 500 petitions in just an hour from educators in the community, AEU continued to push for more.

After making the remainder of their stops around Arizona, AEU and others plan to take the petitions to the secretary of state’s office and return $700 million back into the school budget.

Noah Karvelis, the main organizer of AEU, wants to see $1.1 billion in public education cuts restored which would help teacher retention updated textbooks and funding for arts programs.

“We don’t have enough money to stretch and cover everything in Arizona,” Karvelis said.

According to the Invest in Ed website, the proposition is “expected to raise $690 million which will be deposited into the Classroom Site Fund with 60% of the dedicated revenue directed to teacher salary increases and employment-related expenses and 40% directed to maintenance and operations of public schools. ”
