Two arrested after two-year-old child ingests meth

Two people were arrested after a two-year-old child was hospitalized for ingesting meth last week.

The Yuma Police Department received a call of a two-year-old child that was taken to the hospital by the mother and the mother’s boyfriend at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Officers learned the child had tested positive for methamphetamine.

The mother told police she had not used meth for two years but her boyfriend had used heroin about a week ago.

Officers spoke with the boyfriend whose behavior was consistent with someone under the influence of drugs. Police said he admitted to using meth a few times within the past week. He said he didn’t know how the child ingested the meth but had seen him eat things off the ground before.

The two-year-old child was flown to a Phoenix hospital in critical condition.

YPD conducted a search warrant at the residence located at the 2000 block of Avenue A. Authorities said marijuana, a glass smoking pipe, and five small baggies of meth were found inside the residence. One small bag of meth was found open on the floor inside the home who police say was within the reach of the two-year-old.

At around 11 p.m. that day, the mother and mother’s boyfriend were arrested and booked for multiple drug charges, child abuse, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.

The incident remains under investigation.
