Humane Society helps you prepare for the 4th of July

The Humane Society of Yuma is preparing for the spike in animals that enter their shelter over the 4th of July holiday.

Their shelter is already housing 100 dogs and 275 cats, but HSOY is working to make sure they have room for the new furry friends that anticipate in the coming days.

“Last year for four days, the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th, we received 110 animals into our shelter. It’s about 28 of those is about all that found their way home,” said Annette Lagunas, HSOY executive director.

With the increase in animals they anticipate, HSOY is offering adoptions on a donation only basis for adult animals.

“If we get these animals out of the shelter and into homes, then we can have a safe haven for those who come in over the 4th of July weekend,” said Lagunas.

HSOY is also working to prevent your furry friends from entering their shelter.

They are offering a $20 deal for your furry friends to get microchipped, have a collar and a name tag.

“By having your pet microchipped, a name tag on, we greatly increase the amount of animals that we get back in their homes rather than having to come here into the shelter,” said Lagunas.

The Humane Society also suggested that if you do plan on leaving your pets at home during the holiday to make them feel comfortable.

“Turn the TV on, turn the sound on so it mutes out the fireworks that are going on around you. That is the best thing to do for your pet. Just make sure it’s at home and their comfortable and there in a kennel that they’re comfortable being in,” said Lagunas.

HSOY also suggested ensuring that all gates are locked if your dog must be outdoors.
