Mother detained at border files lawsuit following separation from daughter

An immigrant mother detained near the San Luis border is filing a lawsuit against the federal government after she and her daughter were separated May 21.

According to Nexus Derechos Humanos, the law firm assisting Perla Karlili Alemengor Miranda de Velasquez, her daughter was taken by officials days after her detention.

The lawsuit comes weeks after President Trump signed an Executive Order, allowing migrating families to remain together.

According to Sebastian Sanchez, an immigration attorney in Yuma, Arizona, lawsuits could potentially continue if parents are not reunited with their children.

“People file the lawsuit, invoking the unconstitutionality [the] law or regulation [may pose,’]” Sanchez said. “They also do a preliminary injunction to prevent that policy from taking place.”

Velasquez said she has only spoken to her daughter by phone twice in the last month.

Lawyers representing Velasquez have yet to comment on the matter.
