Calexico PD release statement over claims of excessive force

The Calexico Police Department has released a statement regarding claims of excessive force shown in a video caught by a local man Saturday night.

Calexico police said they approached a 55-year-old man who was unresponsive on the sidewalk at the 100 block of Heber Avenue. Officers woke the man who police say was intoxicated and asked him to get up. As he stood up, the man made an aggressive move towards one of the officers, according to authorities. The officer pushed the man against the wall and brought him down to the ground to restrain him.

CPD said that no punches were thrown during the arrest and the man did not sustain any injuries.

The man was arrested to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Jail and booked for public intoxication and resisting arrest. Police said that during the booking process, the man apologized to the officers for resisting and not recognizing them as CPD officers. The man stated that he had been drinking and was in deep slumber when awakened.

We reached out to authorities who said that the officer in question has been with the force for a decade and is not on paid administrative leave.

The incident and video footage remain under investigation.
